PRINCE GEORGE – As trick-or-treaters take to the streets tomorrow and bring home candy, a Prince George vet is reminding us that chocolate is not good for dogs.

Dr. Denise Kleywegt, Veterinarian at the PG Veterinary Hospital says “mostly it’s dogs, because cats are little bit more particular. Theoretically some cats will still eat chocolate, but dogs, what can happen is essentially it’s like a huge, huge dose of caffeine for them.”

Kleywegt says symptoms of mild toxicity are vomiting and diarrhea, and severe toxic doses can cause rapid heart rates, seizures, and possibly death.

Kleywegt recommends storing Halloween candy away from where dogs can get to, such as in the cupboard.

She says “if you have a dog that’s prone to getting in the garbage, and that, just make sure the cupboards are secured. Keeping it, if it’s in the kids’ rooms, just make sure that it’s not accessible to the pets.”

If your dog accidentally does ingest any chocolate, Kleywegt recommends calling your vet. They can calculate a toxic dose, depending on the dog’s weight and the type of chocolate.

Kleywegt says “we will definitely recommend you coming in to have them vomit it back up if they have ingested a dose that we’re concerned about. Sometimes they even need to stay in hospital if they are in those very serious levels, like cocoa or dark chocolate can get them to.”
