PRINCE GEORGE — The School District 57 Board of Education will write a letter of support to add two Indigenous Trustees to the board.

The Board of Education voted in favour of the recommendation during Tuesday’s board meeting, concluding a process spanning over a year. During the May 28, 2019, board meeting, Dayi Pountney requested the Board support their efforts to have one of the seven Trustee positions filled by a Lheidli T’enneh member. On September 29, 2020, the Lheidli T’enneh Nation and McLeod Lake Indian Band held a joint event to officially request the addition of two Indigenous Trustees.

“The community is starting to listen,” said Dayi Pountney when appealing to the board Tuesday.

A slight amendment was made ahead of the approved vote to include a few pieces of the rationale listed as part of the recommendation. They include the Board recognizing support from other Indigenous and community organizations, an acknowledgment the Board is not able to change the School Act, BC Elections Act, or any other legislative process, and support for the Government to Government relationship between Indigenous First Nations and the Provincial Government.
