Despite a number of events being cancelled this year due to Covid-19, one-holiday tradition which is going to continue is the World Junior Hockey Championships.

For Cougars’ netminder Taylor Gauthier, he hopes to not only be able to represent his country at the tournament but also represent the City of Prince George.

“I kind of had an idea my name would be called for the camp, but whenever I actually got the call and the roster came out, it was definitely a breath of fresh air,” shared Gauthier to CKPG.

Gauthier is among 5 goaltenders vying for a spot on Team Canada. The squad usually selects 3 goaltenders to the team.

The 19-year-old netminder is no stranger to Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence.

He has worn the maple leaf at the 2019 IIHF World Under 18 Hockey Championship, the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, and the 2017 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.

Not only is Gauthier excited to compete for a spot to represent his country, but also to represent the City of Prince George and the Cougars’ organization.

“The last couple of years we’ve had some rough times. I am looking forward to getting out there and representing the City of Prince George, my teammates, and the people that put a lot of hard work into making the team run. I am looking forward to that opportunity and I won’t let them down,” added Gauthier.

Gauthier won’t have to wait long before taking to the ice with his Team Canada hopefuls.

Training camp begins on November 16 in Red Deer.
