Vanderhoof has recruitment success

VANDERHOOF – It wasn’t all that long ago, Vanderhoof was in dire straits when it came to physicians.

To overcome that deficit, the community and Northern Health created a task force, of sorts, to tackle the issue. It identified of a number of factors at play and made recommendations to overcome the challenges. Of significance was the community’s need to be actively involved in the recruitment process.

“But that’s the way to help stabilize any community,” explains Dr. David Snadden, Rural and Doctors’ Chair in Rural Health. “To get everybody together and get everybody to work together. While that report is specific to [Vanderhoof], other communities work together as partners to try to solve any particular health care issues that they have.”

And the work has been successful.

“We’ve recruited four doctors,” says Mayor Gerry Thiessen. “So that’s exciting. They’re moving to our community, they will be part of the community.”

But he says now is the time to take a deeper dive into the report to ensure the actions set out in it are addressed in some fashion.
