PRINCE GEORGE – While the hunt for finding the right moose can take days, the search for finding a butcher may take even longer.

One local butcher has turned people away as the demand for his services continues to increase.

For the past several months’ owner of Northern Big Game Butcher, Denton Johnson keeps so busy that he often works into the night.

Years ago Johnson was processing animals for only friends and family but this season he’s seen such a demand for his skill set that he established his own portable butchering service.

Across the province, some cattle ranchers are experiencing the same type of backlog processing their cattle.

Forcing them to book months in advance for their animals into a slaughter facility.

According to cattle rancher, Ed Wiebe says there is a light at the end of the tunnel for ranchers, as there are plans in the works to build a large meat processing plant in the Prince George area. And in a few weeks, a meat processing plant is set to open in Kamloops.

Wild game butcher Denton Johnson suggests hunters make arrangements with a butcher before heading they harvest an animal.
