Local carver shows off skills

PRINCE GEORGE — Saturday at Art Knapp’s, Isabel Stratton was on location doing a live demonstration of chainsaw carving.

A rather unique skill not many possess but Isabel is one of those select few. Inspired by the Timber Kings spinoff show Carver Kings, Isabel got to meet one of the carvers from the show Ken Sheen. Unable to provide her lessons due to the distance, Sheen pointed her in the direction of a local Prince George carver to give her lessons on how to get started.

After a few lessons, Isabel went off on our own and began teaching herself. Having always taken an interest in the arts and specifically drawing, she took inspiration from her drawing and used that as the base for her carvings.

Her first saw she ever used however came from her father who by trade is a forester. From there she invested in her own chainsaw and received a carving bar for Christmas that she still uses to today. With her tools at the ready, Isabel then comes down to the process of modeling what she will carve.

“I always draw it out first. I’m a really big drawer. I like to plan it out as much as I can and then I take it a bit slower, cut by cut. Then once I start getting into the bigger cuts I go into the smaller power tools and I’ll help with the detail.”

With her first live demonstration under her belt, one of her biggest supporters, her father Len, was also on hand to provide as much help as possible. For Len, it means more to him than just being a helping hand.

“It’s a very special opportunity to do stuff with her…and to have her involved with something like this is special. It’s time we get to spend together.”
