PRINCE GEORGE – Many people try to avoid calories by reducing the amount of sugar in their diet.

Some turn to artificial sweeteners and others use sugar substitutes. There are a variety of sweeteners and choosing the right one can be confusing.

Sugar substitutes and other artificial sweeteners are sometimes found in various foods.

Those who are watching their blood sugar levels tend to use more sugar substitutes, while others use it for dental care.

Not all substituted sweeteners are the same. Each has its own sweetness level and others may change when cooked.

The World Health Organization has set a guideline encouraging people to stay within ten percent of your total energy intake coming from free sugars. Those free sugars include any sugar added during processing or home cooking.
