PRINCE GEORGE — A familiar face will remain as the Regional Chief for the BC Assembly of First Nations. The BC Assembly of First Nations has re-elected Terry Teegee. Teegee won the election, held as part of the 17th BCAFN Annual General Meeting, by a vote of 82-57 over Cheryl Casimer. It is a three-year term.

The number one priority for Teegee is to support Chiefs and communities across the province with COVID-19 safety and security.

“We’re all experiencing this pandemic and further to that is legislation and start developing national legislation on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and make sure to follow-up on outstanding commitments from the federal and provincial governments,” said Teegee.

Mina Holmes, Tribal Chief for the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council, echoed Teegee’s determination for healthcare support. She added systemic racism is an issue seen pre- and post-COVID but has seen more light shed on it due to the pandemic. Looking ahead, Holmes hopes will continue to back Northern BC First Nations with their upcoming projects.

“We have some large negotiation pieces we are working on and hope Terry will continue to support us as we move through these negotiations,” she explained. “And that [Teegee] continues to support the economic prosperity in the North.”

Other elected positions for the BC Assembly of First Nations is Chief Brian Assu and Chief Rosanne Casimir for the two Board of Directors positions. And Taylor Behn-Tsakoza for the Female Youth Representative.
