PRINCE GEORGE – For some work, stress has been regarded as an occupational hazard. Local register nurse Sandra Payne for example has felt those stressors while on the job.

Because of that, she’s created a virtual chat group to assist colleagues with mental health.

The number of nurses who reached out for help surprised her as she’s received over 2500 responses to her Facebook page from nurses across Canada looking for mental health support.

The BC Nurses Union does recognize some nurses do work excessive overtime, have heavy workloads, and experience verbal and physical violence.

One of the recommendations the BC Nurses Union would like to see acted on is to have better earlier intervention support before a nurse becomes burnt out.
