How will the new COVID-19 Health Orders be enforced in PG?

PRINCE GEORGE – It will be a team effort when it comes to enforcing the newest COVID-19 restrictions put in place by BC Health Officials on Thursday.

The provincial government says multiple different authorities will have the ability to enforce mandatory mask-wearing and social gathering restrictions.

Those include City of Prince George bylaw officers, RCMP, WorkSafe BC, and Northern Health inspectors, with other departments able to be utilized if necessary.

Bylaw officers are able to enforce the restrictions but say they can’t hand out fines, saying they will call in the RCMP to do so if needed.

“We do expect an increase in 3-1-1 calls,” says Adam Davey, Director of Community Services and Public Safety with the city. “We will respond, but our priority will be to give education and information.”

Under the Emergency Program Act (EPA), people who organize large, unsafe gatherings or ignore provincial health orders relating to mass gatherings, events or party buses and limousines can be issued a fine or violation ticket of either $200 or $2,000.

You may remember Prince George’s latest big violation, the house party on Regents Crescent where the homeowner was fined over $2,000 for violating public health orders.

Northern Health says they are confident that the public will obey these new orders and they won’t have to intervene to make the public follow them.
