DAWSON CREEK — A 30-year-old Dawson Creek man is facing charges after video surveillance showed he assaulted an employee at the local Walmart for being asked to wear a face mask.

Dawson Creek RCMP say police were tipped off about the incident at 7 p.m. last night (Nov.25).

“A review of the surveillance video identified the suspect whom was located a short time later at his residence,” says Staff Sgt. Damon Werrell. “The male suspect was arrested for assault and mischief and released to attend court at a later date.”

He says the victim suffered minor injuries not requiring immediate medical attention.

“Dawson Creek RCMP would like to remind the public that face masks are required in all indoor public spaces, which includes most business establishments in the Peace region. While individuals may make a personal decision to not wear a face mask they must then not attend indoor public spaces.”

Werrell adds that the RCMP have a responsiblity to enforce the face mask provincial health order under the Emergency Program Act adding that those who refuse to do so, or exhibit abusive or belligerent behaviour, may be fined up to an amount of $230.
