Season of giving ringing loud this year for local business and independent fundraising drives

PRINCE GEORGE – Two UNBC students are leading the St Vincent de Paul Mitten and Sock Drive in Prince George, hoping for and calling to the community for donations of gently used or brand new mittens and socks this holiday season.

“My family’s been going to St Vincent’s drop-in centre to volunteer every once in a while,” said Hannah Graham-Smith. “We realized that in the winter it’s really hard for lots of people who spend most of their time on the streets, it can be really cold and people are at risk of frostbite.”

“We are looking for businesses who we could buy mittens from at a discounted rate,” said Madalyn Johnson. “We’re totally looking for businesses who might want to offer us a discount if they want to contact us at all.”

Businesses interested in helping out with the mitten and sock drive can email Madalyn at madalynjs3@gmail.com, or message their campaign’s Instagram page at mitten_campaign.

Madalyn believes the spirit of giving back and caring for others is louder this year than ever before.

“I think it’s just extra important this year. There are not as many shelters open this year. There are not as many warm places for people to go so people on the street are going to spending a lot more time outside than they’re used to. Gloves are extra important because there’s already been frostbite in the community.”

Hannah and Madalyn ask that anyone looking to make any donation does so to their dropbox at the UNBC Wood Innovation and Design Centre in downtown Prince George.

From there, they will deliver the donations to the St Vincent de Paul drop-in centre, where they will then be distributed.

Meanwhile, KKS Tactical Ltd. is organizing a drive for hampers for the community to give a few families in need a Christmas to remember.

According to the business’ social media page, they would like to put together a list of those that need a hand-up this Christmas, so they can help lower your stress level this holiday season. The business is asking people to message their page if they know of, or are, a family in need this holiday season.

“We know for ourselves with having five children that Christmas causes a lot of stress,” explained co-owner Cassy Premack. “If we can give back and make someone else’s day brighter, whether that be a child, a senior, or someone in need, then we want to make sure we do that.”

KKS is looking to accept non-perishable food donations, as well as gifts for children. They’re also accepting gift cards.

Drop off will be between Tuesday- Saturday during business hours at the store, located at 1925 Nicholson St S.
