VICTORIA — Premier John Horgan opened his media availability this afternoon announcing the new government has had their first cabinet meeting. He says they will call on the legislature next week for a couple pieces of legislation and a short throne speech highlighting short-term plans. Horgan also deferring any COVID talk to our Provincial Health Officer during his opening remarks but did reiterate safety guidelines like mask-wearing and small gatherings – especially for Christmas, Hanukkah, and other holiday festivities.

As for questions taken today – the Premier speaking a bit about pandemic relief payments. And why continuing the programs is effect despite some reports out of Ottawa that say otherwise. The supply bill remains a focus which includes the NDP’s campaign commitment of a one-time recovery benefit for both families and individuals.

The hiring of healthcare workers was also discussed with the Premier saying hirings are already underway. As well, paid sick days. The province has left that for the federal government – which has committed to a paid sick leave policy and could be addressed before the end of the year.
