106 new cases of COVID-19 in Northern Health over the weekend; ban on social gatherings extended until Jan.8

VICTORIA — The COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage in British Columbia.

Over the past three days, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there were 2,020 cases of the virus, including 106 in Northern Health.

Three hundred and forty-nine people are currently in hospital – 77 of whom are in intensive care.

There are now 356 active cases of COVID-19 in Northern Health including 42 people who are hospitalized – 13 of whom are in critical care.

Sadly, there were 35 new deaths over the weekend bringing the provincial death toll to 527. The death toll in Northern Health remains at eight.

Despite all the new cases, Henry said there’s been a “levelling off” of new cases over the past few days but she said the ban on public gatherings and social events has been extended to January 8.
