Bond weighs in on return of legislature for December sitting

VICTORIA — British Columbia’s 87 MLAs are back to work this week participating in a rare December sitting of the legislature in Victoria.

And there’s just one major item on the agenda – to fulfill the NDP’s biggest election promise: provide a one-time, tax free payment of $1,000 to eligible families and $500 to individuals to help people get through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Chris Breach, a political science instructor at the College of New Caledonia, says sitting during a raging pandemic wasn’t really necessary.

“There’s no reason that Premier Horgan needs to recall all the MLAs across B.C. to do something I believe you can do by cabinet order – issuing that cheque.”

And while Interim Liberal Leader Shirley Bond says she agrees the sitting wasn’t necessary, she says her party plans to make the best of it.

“We have significant concern about other items. The government did promise to look at the Accessibility Act in their first sitting of the legislature and here we are and that apparently is not on the agenda,” she says.

“There are a number of other things. When you stop to think about the kinds of supports that small businesses need in British Columbia. Another item is the restaurant industry, which has been very significantly impacted by the pandemic, and the capping of delivery fees. We see no sign of that being discussed and I can tell you that would make a difference for small businesses right across the province.”

Despite his reservations about the sitting, Beach says it will be a good chance for Bond to cut her teeth as interim leader.

“I do think this will be a good opportunity for Shirley Bond. We’ve seen her in leadership positions in the legislature. She’s known for someone with a lot of integrity and she’s not afraid to ask the tough questions. So, this will be a good test for her and we’ll see how she does.”

Bond adds that only eight Liberal MLAs will be in the legislature at any given time, noting that that number is proportional to the number of the party’s 28 elected MLAs.
