Surgeries being postponed in Prince George due to capacity issues

PRINCE GEORGE – BC Minister of Health, Adrian Dix admits there are some surgeries being postponed as capacity issues arise from COVID-19 at UHNBC in Prince George.

Dix says Prince George continues to deal with the bulk of hospitalizations in Northern Health which sits at a total of 49 in hospital across the health region.

Dix says there are between 10-12 people in critical care in Prince George with COVID-19, in addition to other patients altogether who filled up 20 of 23 critical care base beds as of Friday.

Northern Health says surgeries that may be canceled include elective surgeries and those that require admission following the procedure.

Day surgeries will still proceed, but Northern Health says they re-evaluate on a constant basis to make sure they have enough capacity for emergency procedures among other things.

CKPG News spoke to a Prince George senior who had her hip-replacement surgery canceled for the second time last week.

78-year-old Jeanette Stephenson says her quality of life is getting worse every day, now needing a hand from her daughter Tina for doing simple tasks like grocery shopping.

Stephenson isn’t sure when she will be able to get her surgery completed and her mobility restored, she’s hoping it comes sometime in early 2021.
