Capital projects review coming

PRINCE GEORGE – With many projects costing more than the budgeted amount, the City is conducting a review of its procurement practices. That covers everything from requests for proposals to the award of contracts.

“The review that’s going to take place by Administration is taking a look at how do we manage our capital projects,” explains Mayor Lyn Hall. “What do we have to do to really tighten that process?”

He questions, with so many projects underway in the city right, could the City have bitten off more than it could chew. It was also noted that the success of the resource sector is challenging.

“Northern BC’s booming with activity up here,” notes Councillor Kyle Sampson, citing projects like Site C and Coastal GasLink. “And that’s really great for the economy but at the same time it creates a lot of competition when you’re putting those tenders out, when you’re asking for bids. To get people to bid on your project and do the work.”

That’s acutely felt on the trades front.

Some on Council, like Councillor Kyle Sampson, are urging the City to look to a third party to do the work.
