TYH: Vaccines, how they work

PRINCE GEORGE – Germs are known to be everywhere in our environment and in our bodies.

Sometimes people can encounter a harmful organism, it can lead to disease and death. Vaccines are developed to protect us from those harmful germs.

Canadian health officials are expecting a vaccine to be delivered soon. The covid vaccine will work similarly to other vaccines out there.

According to Pharmacist Chris Pallot, “a vaccine is part of a virus that is broken down and inactivated and used to create an injection for creating an immune response by the body.”

According to health officials, some of the COVID vaccines are developed to be administered at different times to be the most effective.

A one-shot series can be effective. Studies will show some are very effective. But a two-shot series is usually better because it can show a longer immune response.

Pallot says not much is known right now how often a person will have to receive a COVID vaccine to protect the long term but thinks at this point that most of the vaccines are showing that they are providing short term immunity, which might mean you have to get it almost like a regular thing in with your regular flu shots.

If you are uncertain to have the covid vaccine when it becomes available it is best to consult your healthcare provider about what’s best for you.
