PRINCE GEORGE – Since July 6th of this year some people may have noticed that they were getting more for their returns at certain recycling centres.

However, starting in the new year some depots across the province will give less for aluminum beer cans as the pilot project comes to an end.

This change has one local MLA pushing the province to extend the pilot program or change the policies on how British Columbians get reimbursed for their returns.

According to MLA John Rustad, some recycling depots across the province don’t have a deal with Brewers Distributors Limited – the organization that pays full price for a returned aluminum beer can.

Starting in the new year people returning beer cans will have to do their homework to find out which depot will give a full deposit refund.

Rustad would like to see a system where people could bring all their recyclable products to one depot. In turn, making it easier for them to recycle.

Teri McClymont with REAPS says there are many reasons why people recycle – one of them is they feel that they are compelled to do so.

Rustad would like similar recycling programs as they do in some other provinces where all aluminum cans can be returned to a local depot for a full refund with no additional sorting required.
