PRINCE GEORGE — Another 1,667 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend in British Columbia.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said 652 new cases occurred from Friday to Saturday, 488 from Saturday to Sunday and 529 from Sunday to Monday (Dec.21).

Here’s the regional breakdown:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 283
  • Fraser Health: 1084
  • Vancouver Island Health: 21
  • Interior Health: 189
  • Northern Health: 90

Henry said 341 people are currently hospitalized in B.C. – 80 of whom are in critical care or intensive care.

There are 9,789 active cases of the virus and 9,651 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of exposure to known cases of COVID-19.

Sadly there were 41 more deaths over the weekend. A total of 47,067 people have been diagnosed with the virus and 35,455 people have recovered.

On the vaccine front, Henry said that 3,644 people – mostly front-line health care workers – were vaccinated in Fraser Health and Vancouver Costal Health last week. She says deliveries of the vaccine have now arrived in all health authorities with vaccinations expected to begin in all of those areas this week.

Henry reacted to the new strain of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom noting that it does mutate but does not seem to increase the severity of illness though it transmits more easily.

She added that we’re starting to see “a levelling of the number of cases” but at a high level. Henry said the surge in cases in Northern Health continues to be a concern.

As a result, she said we all need to remain vigilant in following safety protocols to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
