PRINCE GEORGE — With Christmas just days away, Tis’ the season for giving. But it can also be the season for getting ripped off if you don’t take the proper safety precautions.

The Prince George RCMP says that December brings with it an unswing in the number of thefts it responds to, including the dreaded porch pirate.

“Porch pirates are individuals that take advantage of the fact that many of us these days are online shopping. And this year more than ever people are online shopping, so how can we protect our packages?,” asks Community Policing Coordinator Linda Parker.

“So one recommendation we would have is for people to arrange for their delivery to go to their place of employment. Another option would be to arrange for a delivery to go to a friend or family member that you know will be home at that time.”

And when Christmas is over, she says thieves are just getting started.

“Don’t advertise the fact that you just got that great big flat screen TV or a new laptop computer. Tuck those things away. Make sure that you keep on top of your recycling so you’re not advertising the fact that you have all these brand new items in your home.”

And here’s a tip to consider if you’re out looking for Boxing Week bargains.

“I think this time of year, we are shopping more, which gives thieves more opportunity for spontaneous crime, so you’re shopping in the mall, you dump your packages in your vehicle, make sure they’re in a locked trunk tucked away out of sight, so that people walking by can’t see them and make the impulse decision (to steal them)” says Cst. Jennifer Cooper.

She also reminds us to keep alert when at home.

“So just make sure if you’re in your house and you see a car that you’re not familiar with driving by slowly, or someone walking though the neighbourhood slowly, report that to police.
