Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has issued a public health order banning the sale of liquor from 8 p.m. New Year’s Eve to 9 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

The order affects restaurants, grocery stores and all other outlets that sell alcohol.

She says the goal is to limit the overconsumption of alcohol which she fears will lead to a lack of proper social distancing and ultimately the transmission of COVID-19.

That ban affects restaurants, grocery stores and other retail outlets that sell alcohol.

She also said there’s been 485 new cases of COVID-19 over the past day, including a record 84 in Northern Health.

Henry said 379 people are hospitalized – 77 of whom are in intensive care. In Northern Health, 47 people are hospitalized, 16 of whom are in intensive care.

There have been 11 new deaths bringing the provincial death toll to 893.

There are 7,551 active cases province-wide, 582 in Northern Health and 14,027 vaccines have been delivered.

She said 10 remote communities have now received the Moderna vaccine.
