Rayleigh scattering creating impressive sunrises and sunsets

PRINCE GEORGE – In recent weeks CKPG Today has received several impressive photos of spectacular sunrises and sunsets from its followers online and on TV. We talked to a local meteorologist to find out what’s creating these colorful phenomena.

According to Dr. Peter Jackson, Professor of Environmental Science at UNBC, this winter has featured some spectacular sunrises and sunsets. And this phenomenon is nothing new as it’s known as the Rayleigh scattering of wavelengths of light.

One of the factors that contribute to the frequency of the light shows are the current weather conditions we are experiencing in Northern BC.

At times dust, pollution, and particulate matter floating in the atmosphere can affect the color of the rising and setting sun.

Jackson says we will continue to see these types of sunrises and sunsets as the northern part of the province has clear skies and enough clouds to reflect the colored wavelength.
