BC Liberals call for greater transparency in COVID-19 data reporting

PRINCE GEORGE — The BC Liberals are calling on the NDP government to be more transparent when it comes to COVID-19 data reporting.

Prince George-Valemount MLA and Interim Leader Shirley Bond says their demands include a call for daily updates on vaccinations delivered and administered in each health authority along with detailed daily case breakdowns for schools, long-term care homes and assisted living facilities.

“We know that if British Columbians have more data, we know that the vast majority of people want to do the right thing,” she says. “They want to comply with the public health orders. They want to make sure we are taking care of the most vulnerable in B.C. And one way to ensure that compliance and to encourage people to do the right thing is to give them the information, so they understand why those restrictions are necessary.”

Does she feel things have gotten away from the NDP government as the pandemic has progressed?

“Well, you know, we’re a year into this pandemic and we’re going to obviously continue to face the impacts for some time. And I think that there’s been lots of time to sort this out,” says Bond.

“If B.C. was in line with all the other jurisdictions then obviously we would have less to be concerned about. But many other jurisdictions are providing very detailed specific daily briefings and I think that B.C. should be doing that too.”

Bond says also plans to continue to call on the government to look at rapid testing in long-term care homes.

The BC Liberals mapped out their concerns in a letter to B.C. Health minister Adrian Dix on January 11.
