VICTORIA — “It’s a bit of a setback, but only a delay.”

The words of Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on the delay of the Pfizer vaccine arriving in Canada. The delay is due to a production delay in Europe.

Despite the delay, Henry says British Columbia will still receive a shipment of 26,775 vaccines this week and notes the biggest impact will be next week. Dr. Henry says people will still receive their second dose of the vaccine at day 35.

A total of 87,346 people in B.C. have now been vaccinated and she says we’re still on schedule to have our most vulnerable people vaccinated by the end of March. The rest of the population will begin getting vaccinated in April.

She says 1,330 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 over the weekend in B.C., 166 in Northern Health.

Here’s the regional breakdown:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 281
  • Fraser Health: 548
  • Island Health: 65
  • Interior Health: 257
  • Northern Health: 166

There are 4,326 active cases of the virus in B.C., 343 people are in hospital, 68 of whom are in critical or intensive care.

Sadly 31 more deaths for a total of 1,078 in B.C. Henry says 61,447 people have been diagnosed with the virus since the pandemic began, 54,656 of whom have recovered.
