PRINCE GEORGE – Northeast of Prince George near the foot of the Rocky Mountains is a popular place for snowmobilers.

This area is also the habitat for a herd of mountain caribou. In an effort to protect these animals access to some areas is limited.

Recently, the Conservation Officer Service has seen evidence of sledders within mountain caribou recovery areas though provincial scientists have earmarked over one million hectares across the mountain caribou range.

Some of these areas are closed to motorized winter recreation in an effort to rebuild the caribou population.

As a result, an access road that passes through a caribou protected area is under the watchful eye of the CO services.

According to Conservation Officer Eamon McArthur, when snowmobile tracks are created by snowmobilers, the tracks are used by predators to hunt down caribou.

The BC government has all the closures in the province listed online. The information can be either downloaded into a GPS device or printed.
