Mayor Hall faces media following parkade scrutiny

PRINCE GEORGE – City of Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall spoke to members of the local media Monday afternoon following public scrutiny over the handling of the George street parkade.

This comes following a report by The Prince George Citizen claiming Mayor Hall, select City Councillors, and other city staff were notified of large cost overruns on the project via internal email prior to the information being shared publicly.

In a statement Mayor Hall says:

“Mistakes were made throughout this project. We have to ensure policies are in place to prevent the mistakes that took place. I want you to know, we are doing a thorough examination of how this situation happened and we are determined to find the answers for you the citizens of Prince George,” says Hall.

Hall says there will be changes made at City Hall in lieu of what has taken place over the project.

“As we reflect on the information that’s come to light in recent days and weeks, it’s obvious that there were serious and unacceptable shortcomings in project structure and processes, oversight and information sharing on the parkade project. Bottom line: risk was not managed adequately. We certainly understand the people of Prince George are extremely concerned and angry with what’s happened. You have every right to be, ” says Hall in a statement.

As CKPG News previously reported, City Administration knew about the cost overruns well before Council was made aware.

According to the report to Council, in September 2019, the developer provided further updates for the project based on tender prices for mechanical, electrical, fire suppression, and membrane roofing. The administration was told, “the new estimated cost to complete the George Street Parkade was $22.5 million.”

The report goes on the read:

“At the November 18, 2019 Finance and Audit meeting, the Standing Committee received a Financial Report on Significant Capital Projects, which contained the George Street Parkade construction costs, showing the Total Actual as of November 5, 2019 at $16,372,186.”

The suggestion was that the Finance and Audit Committee was told something different than what the developer told Administration In September.

“As the responsible body for the municipality, this council – and I as mayor – take the mistakes that happened very seriously. We are committed to full transparency and accountability, and to taking corrective measures to ensure these kinds of things cannot happen again,” says Hall
