PRINCE GEORGE – The weekend did not start the way Colby Graham was hoping. After nearly a month of training in Austria, the Prince George snowboarder made his way to Italy with his Canadian teammates.

“I actually fell my first qualification run so I was pretty pissed about that,” said Graham in a Zoom call with CKPGToday.ca. “Then the weather rolled in, was dumping snow and wind. That’s not what you want for your second run, especially if you’re trying to make up for a mistake. That race didn’t go super well. Actually, that ended up being my worst result ever.”

From there, Graham said he was feeling like it was time for redemption. For the next race, organizers ran a qualification heat, picked out by points. Graham raced in that in a heat with the top Italian rider and a well known French rider.

“I watched all of their videos going into the race. I knew that the Italian and French rider had slower starts and were known to mess up in one section, so I was expecting to get out front and battle at the bottom.”

However, the French and Italian riders ended up colliding with one another, leaving Graham to cruise through qualifications.

In his first-round heat, Graham raced against Jake Vetter of the United States, as well as Alex Deibold. Vetter finished 4th overall while Deibold finished 6th.

“Ended up third. Messed up my start a little bit but tried to battle back a little bit. Ended up third respectively so that was nice.”

Graham finished 17th overall in a class of 63, his best finish yet on the World Cup circuit. Looking back at a weekend that saw a tough start but a strong finish, the performance proved to Graham what he’s capable of.

“I can get in there. I just need to be ready to put it all in,” said Graham. “Obviously, on that Friday of qualification, I just wasn’t there for my first run. I just need to make sure I’m there, and when I am there I can ride with those guys and get in there.”

Now back in Austria to get more training ahead of a trip to Sweden for another World Cup event. He will then have two World Cup events in Georgia, hoping to crack 32 overall in order to make the World Finals in Switzerland. Graham is also hoping to crack the Canadian National Team by the end of the season, which can be done if he cracks 32 overall.
