More cases of COVID-19 variants detected in BC, NH adds 98 cases

PRINCE GEORGE – BC Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry along with BC Health Minister Adrian Dix announced the latest on the COVID-19 front in BC since Friday.

Health officials are reporting that there have been additional cases of the UK and South African variants of the virus identified in the province since Friday.

British Columbia has had four South African variant cases with three of those unlinked. Three of four cases were reported in the Vancouver Coastal Health Region.

There have been 14 UK Variant cases in BC, including seven new cases. Eight of the cases are in Fraser Health with seven of those related to travel.

Fraser Health has begun testing a school cohort to identify potential additional cases of variants of the virus.

Dr. Henry announced 21 more deaths related to the virus in the Province since Friday.

In the province, 1,158 new cases of the virus have been reported since Friday. 408 between Friday and Saturday, 473 between Saturday and Sunday, and 277 between Sunday and Monday.

In Northern Health there were another 98 cases of the virus reported.

In the province as of Monday afternoon, there were 289 people in hospital, a decrease of three with 79 people in ICU, an increase of five.

Active cases have decreased since Friday now sitting at 4,134 active cases throughout the province.

“We are looking forward to doing immunizations on a bigger scale than ever before here in the Province in the coming weeks,” added Dr. Bonnie Henry.

So far 138,892 people in BC have received their single COVID-19 vaccine doses, as 4,491 have received their second doses.
