PRINCE GEORGE – Wednesday marks National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

It’s an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of participating in athletics and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.

CKPGToday.ca went up to the campus of UNBC to talk to a pair of Timberwolves, chatting with basketball player Alina Shakirova and soccer player Lexy Green on what National Girls and Women in Sports Day means to them and the importance of having women involved, both in the competitive environment, but also behind the scenes of the sporting world.

“It helps to break the stigma that women can’t do something or hold certain positions,” said Shakirova. “It’s also important for future girls to have them grow up and know that they can take leadership positions. Sports help everyone with leadership and I think it’s especially important right now because women can now get that experience in sports and bring it to their work setting, as well as our community.”

“It means a lot to me. It’s given me, being here with the Timberwolves, has given me an opportunity to extend my athletic career,” explained Green. “It just goes to show everyone, especially young girls in the community, that if you put the effort in and you work towards your goals and you have your positive mindset, anything can happen. Especially in this community with the Timberwolves and UNBC specifically, the inclusive and welcoming tone has really helped me strive for more than I could ever imagine.”

February 3, 2021 marks the 35th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
