Four-term Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP McLeod announces she will not seek re-election

KAMLOOPS — The four-term MP for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo has announced she will not seek a fifth.

In a video posted to social media Thursday morning (Feb. 4), Cathy McLeod says she will not put her name forward for nomination ahead of the next federal election, whenever that may be. The Justin Trudeau Liberals were elected as a minority government in 2019, meaning a confidence vote in the House of Commons could result in a snap election.

McLeod was first elected for the Conservatives in 2008, succeeding former MP Betty Hinton. She was formerly a registered nurse, healthcare administrator and mayor of Pemberton.

McLeod has held several roles since she was first elected, both as a government MP for her first two terms and an opposition MP for her last two.

Under newly-chosen Opposition Leader Erin O’Toole last September, McLeod was re-appointed the Critic for Crown-Indigenous Relations.

She hints that this decision does not mean retirement, saying “I hope to write a few more chapters in my life before the final conclusion.”
