Prince George tax levy to be decided Monday

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s been delayed twice already, but as they say the third time is the charm.

Prince George City Council and Mayor Lyn Hall will decide what the change to city taxes will be in their council meeting on Monday night.

Previously, Council sought an additional budget meeting in order to allow time to think about their next moves.

City Administration is suggesting a two percent tax hike to keep up with inflation, but some on Council are looking to spend a portion of the provincial Restart money to keep the tax hike at zero.

Mayor Lyn Hall and Councillors will also review a request from the Prince George RCMP for two additional officers.

While the base policing budget of $28 million was approved, Superintendent Shaun Wright presented to Council on January 27th with a request for two additional officers. Those officers would be specially trained to address more of the social issues in the community.

“In order to meet the public expectations and improved levels of service delivery, the Strategic Plan will focus strongly on providing a more robust internal training program for the detachment in several areas, including the following:

  • Mandatory firearms and use of force options: Focus on achieving 100% compliance with mandatory re-certification for use of force theory & skills, firearms, and less lethal intervention options.
  • Crisis de-escalation and mental health: Advanced training in the area of mental health and crisis de-escalation.
  • Medical/life-saving training: Training in areas such as basic traumatic medicine and swift water rescue.
  • In-service training: Locally developed training to address local service delivery gaps specific to the community of Prince George.

On January 27th, Supt Wright noted that he doesn’t ask this “lightly.”
