131 new cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region over the weekend

VICTORIA — There were a total of 1,236 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend in British Columbia.

From Friday to Saturday, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said there were 428 new cases, from Saturday to Sunday another 464 cases and from Sunday to today 343.

Here’s the regional breakdown:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health region: 266
  • Fraser Health: 601
  • Island Health: 86
  • Interior Health: 152
  • Northern Health: 131

According to Henry, 70,952 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in B.C. since the pandemic began and 65,605 of those people have recovered.

She says there are now 3,976 active cases of the virus in B.C., 234 people are hospitalized, 69 of whom are in critical care.

Sadly, 13 more deaths in B.C. for a total of 1,259.

Henry says 154,496 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, 12,111 of which are second doses.

Moving forward, she expects B.C. will receive increased deliveries of vaccine each week leading to early March when Henry expects the mass vaccination program will begin.

She says that means those over the age of 80 years old will soon receive information about where and when they will be able to receive their COVID-19 vaccines.

Henry also said that there are now 40 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 variant in B.C. – 25 of the U.K. variant and 15 of the South African variant.

She says 15 of those U.K. variant cases were located in the Fraser Health region, five in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, four in the Island Health region and one in Interior Health.

As for the South African variant, 13 were found in the Vancouver Coastal Health region and two in Fraser Health.
