‘This is the worst I’ve seen it’: Concerns raised about vulnerable populations left out in the cold

PRINCE GEORGE – There is a growing concern about vulnerable populations and the access or lack thereof they have to shelter spaces and places to warm up.

Coral Henry is one of those raising concerns in the city, saying more needs to be done to give better access to those who need it.

Henry knows what those on the streets are going through after going through homelessness and addiction herself.

“With COVID, this is the worst by far I’ve seen it,” says Henry. “I’ve been on the street and asking a lot of questions why people won’t go to the shelter. Some people have stated that the shelters are full, and lot of people have stated they don’t want to go to a shelter because they can’t use drugs there.”

CKPG News has learned many of the shelters around the city have been operating at or near capacity.

Henry worries about those who can’t get inside especially in temperatures so cold, they could be deadly.

“We should be opening up more spaces in the city,” says Henry. “Even a gymnasium.”

There are multiple levels of government involved who could organize such an operation, but until they do, Henry worries about the survival of those in the elements.
