PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George-Nechako Aboriginal Employment and Training Association (PGNAETA) in partnership with Positive Living North (PLN) have opened a new warming centre on 3rd Avenue.

‘The Fire Pit’ is being used as an emergency warming shelter with staff on-site, for people who wish to sleep, play board games, and most of all stay warm.

It’s the first warming station of its kind in Prince George says PLN.

“It’s scary right now, and this is life-threatening, and I feel like this is a great opportunity for our patrons and our organizations to help Prince George,” says Nicole West, Program Office Manager and Executive Assistant at Positive Living North. “I know that there are other places in BC that are doing warming centres as well so this is a great opportunity.”

Space can accommodate up to 10 people off of the streets and will be open from 10 pm to 7 am until the extreme cold conditions improve.

Positive Living North says they are grateful to help PGNAETA, who they say has gone above and beyond for vulnerable populations in the downtown core and throughout the city over the recent days.

Outreach workers and those from PGNAETA have been outside trying to bring those on the streets inside, shelters are the first priority, but Positive Living North says the emergency warming shelter is a great alternative at this time.

Reports of temporary hotel rooms purchased were confirmed by PGNAETA on Thursday, who wanted to extend thanks to a hotel downtown Prince George who treated those who needed shelter with the dignity and respect they deserved, especially thankful for the staff who they say went above and beyond.

Karen Hunt with PGNAETA, says the accommodation provided an excellent rate for the 19 rooms that were allocated and provided a bed and breakfast on Wednesday morning.
