PRINCE GEORGE – A warming trend has finally arrived and is expected to stick around for a little while.

But with that warming trend, there is a risk it may have an effect on the stability of the snowpack in the backcountry.

Avalanches can be triggered either naturally or artificially. Natural triggers may include events like heavy snowfall or a rapid rise in temperature.

This weekend the temperatures are expected to rise above the freezing mark. Over the last couple of weeks, we had arctic air settle over the province, currently, we are experiencing a warm-up which is taking us back to normal temperatures.

Avalanche Canada doesn’t expect the rain to reach the higher elevations, however, those venturing into the backcountry should still be watchful of rain events near the alpine areas.

Environment Canada expects to see a few more cold days coming but nowhere near what we just experienced.
