VICTORIA —Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 559 new cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia today, including 66 in the Northern Health region.

Here’s the regional breakdown:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 132
  • Fraser Health: 278
  • Island Health: 39
  • Interior Health: 43
  • Northern Health: 66

She says there are 4,677 active cases of the virus, 238 people are in hospital, 69 of whom are in critical or intensive care. In addition to that, 7,881 people are under active public health monitoring.

Since the pandemic began, 77,822 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19, 71,753 of which have recovered.

One person has died over the past 24 hours bringing B.C.’s death toll to 1,336. That person was in acute care and lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

Henry says the lone death is a reflection of the success of B.C.’s vaccine rollout calling it “remarkable.”

She says 278,950 people have received the COVID-19 vaccine, 58,896 of which are second doses.

Henry also said that work is being done right now to engage with communities around locations where people can receive a vaccine.

She also acknowledges there will be “hiccups” along the way but says public health officials will be in touch with eligible people over the age of 80 in the coming days and weeks.

Henry says the number of cases remains a concern, including spread of COVID-19 variants and says we need “to hold steady” to get through the pandemic.

That includes following provincial health guidelines as they relate to the pandemic.
