Two men charged in connection with break in and assault on senior

SMITHERS — The RCMP says BC Prosecution Services have approved charges in connection with an assault on an elderly woman after two suspects broke into her home on Dec.18,2020 in Smithers.

The assault occurred just after 2:30 a.m. that day at a home on the 3000 block of 8th Avenue.

North District RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says when police arrived on scene, they discovered an 88-year-old woman had been assaulted after the suspect used bear spray in the home. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment as a result.

Forty-five Eugene Tom has been charged with the following:

• Theft of Motor Vehicle 333.1(1) CC,
• Break and Enter & Commit theft 348(1)(b) CC,
• Break and Enter & Commit assault 348(1)(b) CC
• Possession of Stolen Property under $5000 355(b) CC

• Theft of Motor Vehicle 333.1(1) CC,
• Break and Enter & Commit theft 348(1)(b) CC,
• Break and Enter & Commit assault 348(1)(b) CC

Saunderson says Tom has been remanded in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday, March 2 while Brown has been released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, March 30.
