PRINCE GEORGE — Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and Trinity United Church Prince George have voted unanimously to become affirming ministries.

It means both churches will strive to be fully inclusive of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. That’s a first in Prince George.

The votes at both churches took place this month and were years in the making.

“This means that for churches who believe that God fully accepts the LGBTQSI2S+ community have to be very intentional about saying it, therefore having an affirming statement is critical,” says Pastor Fleming Blishen of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

“We are also trying to stop further trauma for those who are LGBTQSI2S+ in the church and those who will come later. We want to affirm their identity in the eyes of God, so that they can know that they are loved beyond measure, loved as much as everyone else.”

“It’s been a long process for us,” says Rev. Dr. Bob K Fillier with Trinity United Church Prince George. “We’ve literally kind of been moving towards the vote that happened for a few years. So, it kind of feels like the culmination in that sense of reaching a milestone. And yet we often say to folks that you don’t become an affirming ministry, you’re always in the process of becoming.”

Kendra Mitchell-Foster, a member of both the LGBTQSI2S+ and the Trinity United Church Prince George first moved to town in 2013 with her wife and called the unanimous vote “joyful” and a “relief.”
