Victoria to extend rent freeze

The B-C government has introduced legislation to extend a rent freeze introduced due to the pandemic until the end of this year and cap future increases at the rate of inflation.
If passed, it says the changes would also end illegal renovictions by requiring landlords to apply to the Residential Tenancy Branch before terminating a lease for renovations or repairs.
Renovations that are not substantial or do not require a rental unit to be vacant would be banned.
Vancouver M-L-A Spencer Chandra Herbert says the changes will end bullying behaviour meant to drive out long-term tenants and jack up the rent.
