PRINCE GEORGE – As a result of COVID-19, many community organizations have their doors shut in large part to the financial burden caused by the pandemic. Such has been the case for School District 57’s Nusdeh Yoh School, having to decrease sports programming for their kindergarten to Grade 7 students.

“We weren’t able to have our hockey program this year so we weren’t sure what type of sport or recreation we would be able to provide to them,” explained Alison Thibodeau, the Community Schools Coordinator at Nusdeh Yoh.

Thanks to grant support from Jumpstart’s Sport Relief Fund, Nusdeh Yoh is one of 668 sport and recreation organizations across the country to receive such support. The support has allowed the students to make trips to both the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club and the Hart Ski Hill.

“We’ve noticed that a lot of the kids haven’t even been outside of their homes so they haven’t had a lot of outdoor activities to enjoy and experience. It really helps with their mental health and their overall resilience and determination.”

For Thibodeau, the whole experience has been amazing as she’s witnessed firsthand the individual growth in each of the students.

“It’s really amazing because they have so much anxiety and fear at first. With the support of the ski hill staff, they’re slowly able to overcome it and so they feel like they just conquered the mountain.”
