No deadline extension for taxes

PRINCE GEORGE – Most people will have their T4 slips and any other paperwork they need to file their tax returns for 2020. When taxes were filed last year, the Canada Revenue Agency extended the filing deadlines in light of the COVID pandemic and the financial implications it brought on. Not this year.

“The first thing I want to say is that there are no extensions,” explains Stan Mitchell, Partner with KPMG. “I’m still getting that question. If you remember last year, I think [the deadline] stretched all the way to September. But right now, the normal filing deadlines and the normal payment deadlines are in place.”

But 2020 was anything but normal for workers. The COVID pandemic meant that many people worked from home and the Canada Revenue Agency has given some compensation.

“For each day that you’re using your home office, you can claim two dollars a day up to a maximum of four hundred dollars or two hundred days.”

And, just a heads up, for those who may have availed themselves of the Canadian Emergency Recovery Benefits, they may be required to pay taxes on those benefits.
