PRINCE GEORGE – It’s been a challenge for the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club to get back on the court, but with huge thanks to the provincial governing body, Volleyball BC, the Kodiaks and their programming have been able to remain inbounds.

“We basically had to just come up with our Return to Play plan and they walked us through that. That was the easy part,” explained Dan Drezet, President of the PGYVC. “The tougher part starting last year when everything was shut down and heading into the summer there wasn’t any access to gyms. The toughest part was getting into the gym but we’re at CNC and up at UNBC at the Northern Sport Centre now, and we’re really grateful for that.”

When it comes to access to other facilities here in the city, the PGYVC hasn’t been able to get engaged in any communication with the City or school district for months now.

“The athletes are allowed to play without a mask while they’re on the competition surface,” said Drezet. “Coaches have to wear a mask at all times. No spectators, which is tough for our parents. On the floor, there’s social distancing still in place. I know when they’re playing there’s going to be times when players are going to get a little bit close to each other but as long as it’s not for a duration of time they’re okay.”

The PGYVC is also conducting routine health checks with athletes as they arrive for each session, and that includes all the necessary data to conduct proper contact tracing in the event of possible exposure. As of right now, they haven’t experienced any.

Just looking around the gym, it was obvious just how important sports are and the weight they carry as Drezet admits he’s noticed a gradual improvement in the athletes’ morale.

“It’s been great. I think the kids are great, they want to be here. There are lots of times in a long season when kids get frustrated and it might be getting tiring and are looking forward to doing an outdoor sport but that hasn’t happened here. Our kids are excited and thankful for the opportunity. We’ve also had a lot of feedback from our parents that are just grateful that we’re able to run.”
