Prince George – The Covid-19 pandemic led many British Columbians to pursue home renovations.

“We surveyed a number of BC Hydro customers across the province, many pursued those renovations for aesthetic reasons, others wanted to make the changes for comfort, and a very few wanted to make it for energy efficiency,” says BC Hydro, Community Relations Manager, Bob Gammer.

But 20% of the residents are not happy with their renovation decisions, as the desired outcome did not come.

“It’s a case of, they didn’t spend enough money, they didn’t do exactly what they wanted, they also didn’t hire a professional,” says Gammer

Gammer says that those are the usual problems, but the lack of research that could’ve been done on bchydro.com was the main contributor for many regrets.

This comes as about 60% of British Columbians thought aesthetics renovations will help in their home resale value being maintained or increasing in the long run.

“What really can help in the long-run is investments in the energy efficiency of your home . . . replacing your doors, your windows, your roofing, or making an upgrade to the heating and cooling system of your home,” says Gammer.

Gammer added, the survey found that In the province, the Northerns spent the most, with between $20,000 to $50,000 on renovations.

Their renovations were focused on energy saving, but nearly 25% of them ended up regretting, doing home improvements on their own.

Despite past regrets, More than 40% of British Columbians will continue to renovate their home this spring.
