PRINCE GEORGE — The fifth annual Prince George YMCA, Megathon took place on Saturday. There were over 2,000 participants of all ages.

The participation was online, through Facebook live sessions, and an online Get Active Checklist.

Every $10 earned with the checklist, allowed individuals to get an entry towards winning a prize, of a Nintendo Switch.

But Northern BC, YMCA CEO, Amanda Alexander says the online environment did not affect the donation numbers.

“We are getting close to our fundraising goal, at our last count, we are a thousand dollars short of our Strong Kids fundraising goal,” says Alexander.

She added the total goal for the campaign is $60,000.

“We fundraise throughout the year, but [the Megathon] is our concentrated fundraising effort during our Strong Kids Month campaign,” says Alexander.

The goal for the Megathon alone is $10,000, but the donations made are still being counted.

“We are really hoping folks will reach out and support our cause before our final count [August 31st],” says Alexander.

Prince George, kids and families in need will benefit from the donations.

“The donations made will go towards supporting one out of every five people who come to the YMCA, health and fitness facility. One out of every four campers to attend camp. Folks who have economic challenges, financial disadvantages. As well as we support the Beyond the Belt program . . . ,” says Alexander.

Alexander added the Beyond the Belt program, which is an after school program for economically disadvantaged children.
