PRINCE GEORGE – Living with a person who has dementia is not without its challenges. From time to time, those living with the disease are sometimes known to wander away from their home.

The Alzheimer’s Society of BC has many suggestions and resources on dealing with this critical issue.

A simple activity like going for a walk is not a dangerous activity. Still, it can become dangerous when a person living with dementia becomes disoriented or the environment they are in poses a risk.

Dementia is a direct result of physical changes in the brain, and there are some common reasons why they may walk or drive away.

Reducing the temptations to leave home can prevent a person living with dementia from walking away.

When a person goes missing, keep in mind that you are not alone, and others are available to help.

For some search and rescue teams around the province, searching for people with dementia has become part of their regular call-outs.

Caregivers looking for resources on the challenges of living with dementia can contact the Alzheimer Society of BC.
