PRINCE GEORGE — It’s the last day of school for students at Edgewood Elementary, and they kickstarted into spring break with a a socially distanced event, called Soar into Spring Break.

“We wanted to invite our community to us, because we really missed connecting with the community,” says Edgewood Elementary Principal, Lauri Brice.

But Brice adds that’s not the only purpose, as she says the school wants to showcase their sacred teachings.

“So here at Edgewood we’re the eagles, and our eagle’s Soar, safety, ownership, achievement, respect. And within that we are following the Aboriginal sacred teachings to guide that work to help eagle Soar, says Brice.”

Brice adds that the whole school helped get the message out.

“So the kids today, each class chose one of the teachings and they’re going to showcase that, as the parents drive around”

Though this event at Edgewood Elementary is larger then what would take place at the school, despite it being socially distant.

“Normally, the students will be cleaning up their classrooms, and doing some final activities, and tying up the learning for spring break,” says Brice.

But it’s not all fun and games for everyone as the pandemic did cause some students to change their Spring Break plans.

“For my hockey because I play Spring hockey, and a lot of the games I won’t be able to play,” says Grade 7 student, Marcus

While another student is optimistic about his plans.

“I was thinking about hanging out with a couple friends, I might still be able to, just social distance and outdoors of-course, says Grade 7 student, Brayden.

The Prince George Covid-19 case numbers will determine whether individuals changing their summer plans was worth it.
