It’s World Water Day

PRINCE GEORGE — The United Nations World Water Day is today, and it marks the 25th consecutive year it’s taking place.

“The United Nations has global goals to recognize the importance of water, what it means to different people in different settings. And so what the United Nations is encouraging now is conversations, people to speak up and write about how they value water, says BC Hydro, Community Relations Manager, Bob Gammer.

Gammer adds, this way more people can appreciate water’s importance across cultures and across uses.

The UN’s Sustainable Development report focuses on different strategic water issues, and provides decision makers with tools to promote sustainable use of water resources.

Water and sanitations for the world started in 2016 is expected to be completed by 2030. The total in expenses is estimated to be about $114 billion per year.

However, the international organization did say in prior reports that nearly 6 billion people will suffer from clean water and scarcity by 2050.

But the numbers do all depend on how citizens across the world value water.

On the other hand, BC Hydro is using World Water Day to review their water sustainability.

“We are committed to reviewing our water use plans, so we’ve just started that process. It will probably take about a decade to just carefully review each plan around our system, and come up with some revisions that are meaningful,” says Community Relations Manager Gammer

He further explains BC Hydro’s sustainability process . . .

“So we have a water use planning process that years ago that years ago established plans we filed with the office of the comptroller of water rights for British Columbia. The comptroller issued orders which dictate how we operate our reservoirs at our facilities, dams and generating stations”

Gammer says that BC Hydro works closely with First Nations, local communities around reservoirs, and government agencies that are also responsible for water usage.
