PRINCE GEORGE – MP Todd Doherty drew criticism from some medical professionals over a post made to his public Facebook page on Tuesday.

The Facebook post was made to update what the Cariboo-Prince George MP was doing, as he prepared to make a speech over concerns of mental health during pandemic “lockdowns.”

Many in the comments section say they were confused, some thought the post implied Doherty was in support of ending restrictions and “getting back to normal.”

Doherty clarified on Wednesday that was not the case, putting emphasis that he was in support of restrictions only being rolled back when things are safe to do so.

Doherty says the only thing he’s asking for from the Trudeau Government is a plan post-pandemic.

“Just to clarify my post yesterday letting you know that I was back in Ottawa and what specifically we were calling for in our Opposition Day Motion. A clear data-driven plan to support safely, gradually, and permanently lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Any insinuation that I, or this motion, goes against medical experts is false and misleading.” said Doherty.

Former Federal Liberal Party candidate Tracy Calogheros says the original post is misleading, adding posts like these can be dangerous.

“To see this made into a partisan issue is simply wrong,” says Calogheros.

Calogheros says people should follow public health advice and make decisions based on science, the new emerging strains of the virus pose yet another challenge.

All of this discussion started as Doherty prepared to make a speech voicing concerns for mental health in Parliament as the pandemic continues for a possible third wave according to medical experts.
