PRINCE GEORGE – Spring is the time of year when people can hear the Northern Flicker woodpecker drumming and drilling holes.

This protected bird sometimes attempts to make its home in the side of buildings, causing extensive damage.

In recent weeks the Jim Pattison Broadcast building has once again come under attack from the burrowing bird.

The stucco siding at the Prince George Aquatic Centre has also become a target of the woodpecker.

And as frustrating as it can seem to some, the animal is protected under the Migratory Bird Act, and the process of removing the birds can be a long journey.

According to ornithologist Ken Otter, the Northern flickers are plentiful in our region.

To avoid one hanging around your house, experts say there are things you can do. For example, purchasing reflectors or making loud noises.
